Skype founder and Atomico CEO Niklas Zennström "Paris is a leader of Deep Tech in Europe"

Niklas Zennström, CEO of Atomico and cofounder of Skype, explains how a Parisian groundswell of the latest technologies is being created.

Today more than ever, when I think of Paris, I visualise intelligent machines, robots with emotions and virtual reality technologies. This new wave of the latest technology (Deep Tech), for which Paris has become a spearhead, will impact our existence on many levels. There is a huge economic potential for France, if it knows how to profit from this momentum. France, and more specifically Paris, can boast of having world famous entrepreneurs and scientists amongst its ranks. And one can now envisage a company worth several billion dollars setting up in Paris.

The ambitious entrepreneurs who founded BlaBlaCar, Criteo and Drivy set up their companies in France, from where they will spread internationally. Local entrepreneurs are investing their expertise and capital in the ecosystem, such as demonstrated by Frédéric Mazzella (BlaBlaCar) and other start-ups, which are also Parisian -Bnbsitter and ZenPark- or even the creation by Xavier Niel of the Ecole 42, whose aim is to train the best developers in the world.

It is no coincidence that Facebook has chosen Paris to set up their research laboratory dedicated to artificial intelligence; it is the only one from the social network to be located outside of the United States. As a reminder, Facebook’s projects in the field of artificial intelligence are piloted by Yann LeCun, a Parisian who is one of the world’s most important specialists able to teach machines to think.
